Diane Powers "Mother of modern old town"
Diane Powers, affectionately dubbed the "mother of modern Old Town," revitalized San Diego's historic district in the 1970s by founding Bazaar del Mundo, a vibrant Mexican-inspired marketplace of eclectic shops and acclaimed restaurants. She created a colorful haven blending artistry, cuisine, and culture, drawing crowds and igniting economic renewal while honoring the area's heritage.
Central to her vision were three flagship restaurants—Casa Guadalajara in Old Town with its lush patios and award-winning margaritas; Casa de Pico in La Mesa, evoking a grand hacienda; and Casa de Bandini in Carlsbad, alive with gardens and folk art—each serving authentic Mexican flavors that became San Diego staples. Complementing them, Bazaar del Mundo's quirky quartet of shops—Ariana's hand-painted fashions, Artes de Mexico's Talavera pottery and Oaxacan carvings, Guatemala Shop's woven textiles and Haitian art, and the Kitchen Shop's vibrant ceramics and spices—offered a bazaar of global treasures, infusing Old Town with enduring, whimsical energy. Her legacy endures, marked by the 2024 "Diane Powers Way" sign and ongoing multicultural events.
